SENEGAL
Project: Akon City Project

The American company KE International has been awarded the contract to build this futuristic and ecological city, which will be located near Mbodième, a small coastal village in the west of Senegal. This locality will see the growth of a town whose development will revolve around a crypto-currency called Akoin that will be launched this year. The construction of the new Akon City will require an investment of $6bn. The city, which is intended to be environmentally friendly, will be built on an area of 2,000 hectares. KE International has already secured $4bn for the first and second phase of the project. The consulting and engineering firm has thus chosen to implement this mega project with Bakri & Associates Development Consultants.
The company based in Dubai, UAE, will be responsible for the architectural design of Akon City. According to KE International, the first phase of the project, which will be completed in 2023, will result in the construction of roads, a Hamptons Hospital campus, a Hamptons Shopping Centre, residences, hotels, a police station, a school, a landfill for the city’s waste and a solar power plant to supply the whole. The second phase of the Akon City project is scheduled to begin in 2024 and be completed in 2029. It will allow the complete construction of the city which will operate exclusively with Akoin crypto-money. The city will consist of parks, universities, schools, a stadium, hotels and an industrial complex.
KENYA
Project: Construct Koru-soin Dam

The construction work on the proposed Koru-Soin multipurpose dam on river Nyando, in the western region of Kenya, is set to begin in September 2020. The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has granted interim approval for the project and the National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority (NWHSA) is currently working with the National Land Commission to ensure that the project affected persons are compensated for the loss of their land. The project covers approximately 2,500 acre of land, equal to a total of 360 parcels of which 230 are in Kisumu county and 130 in Kericho county. The Koru-Soin multipurpose dam is designed to control flooding, supply water for domestic and industrial consumers in the city of Kisumu and the satellite towns nearby and generate power at an associated two MW hydropower plant.
Upon completion, the project is expected to provide 102,000 cu mtr per day of water to a population of 1.71 million and to end water shortages in the neighboring counties of Kericho, Nandi and Kisumu.

Egypt’s Minka Development plans to start construction of its newly launched residential project in East Cairo in the third quarter. Yet-to-named project would be developed at an investment of 5.5bn Egyptian pounds ($344m). The residential compound, spread over an area of 27 acres, would be delivered by end-2024. The land was purchased from master developer Madinat Nasr Housing and Development (MNHD).

Optimization of capital costs will be achieved through cost-effective classrooms design, multifunctional science labs, collaborative ICT enhanced learning spaces, optimized administrative spaces and teachers housing, and ultimately adoption of a School Construction Strategy.
