Caterpillar Inc. today announced that Tenke Fungurume Mining Corp. has selected Cat dealer Congo Equipment to provide power solutions for the company’s copper and cobalt mining operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Congo Equipment installed and commissioned 14 Caterpillar DE550 diesel generator sets to supply a total of 7.7 MW of standby and prime power for mining operations, ore processing, crew support, and administrative functions. Congo Equipment also provides on-site support to Tenke Fungurume Mining by deploying technicians available around the clock and operating a component rebuild center.

Tenke Fungurume Mining is Africa’s leading copper producer and the top miner of cobalt in the world. Approximately 180km (112 miles) northwest of the city of Lubumbashi, its mining operations currently employ more than 8,000 local Congolese citizens on a full-time basis.

Caterpillar and the Cat dealer network offer power systems for mines ranging from the largest surface and underground operations down to the smallest quarries. The solutions are engineered to keep operations running reliably and efficiently while protecting the safety of crew members.
